Wave 4 staging at the beach start. Clear, calm water ahead! |
Getting there:
Drove to Pismo Beach on Wednesday, went for a nice beach walk and then swim at the Avila Hot Spring pool. Stayed overnight at the Spyglass Inn and drove to Long Beach on Thursday morning to catch the 2pm Ferry to Avalon.
Being there:
Stayed at 216 Whitley C -- the upstairs unit.. much better than staying downstairs as I did last year - especially given the fact that the upstairs people had at least 15 people staying for their party hardy weekend in Avalon.
Dinner on Friday:
Roasted Chicken Breast, Egg Papparadelle with fresh tomato, basil sauce, Sweet potatoes, carrots, Zucs and salad. Lots of Endurolytes during the day, because I had a headache -- it finally went away around 3:30pm.
Race:
Transition opened at 7:30am as usual. I set my alarm for 6:00am, and went to sleep around 10:00pm. Some party people down in the street woke me up in the wee hours, but I went back to sleep until the alarm went off. Lemon water at 6:15am, Coffee by 6:30am, Oatmeal, banana, Hammer Gel by 6:50am, then Hammer Whey Protein and all of the vitamins shortly after. I left for the transition area at 7:20am.
Easy to get in this year, no wait. I racked my bike in the Wave 4 racks, near a palm tree, then set up my things on a big plastic bag covering the sand. Spirits seemed high, supportive and jovial. I hung around, went to my favorite restroom at The Pavillion and finally changed from my warm clothes to my Xterra Full Wetsuit.
4 Race Caps Supreme/4 Endurolytes and Heed at about 8:10am.
Wave 4 was a very kind and cooperative wave, no issues in the swim except that it was longer than usual. I did my usual, got out of the water, sat down on a wall and gook off my wetsuit. Put on my socks, Hokas, Helmet, Glasses and took off.
On the Bike, I drank Heed and ate a Hammer Peanut Butter Gel. No issues except that the course was open to cars, trucks and gold carts.... no Fun.. I almost crashed on the curb going into Clarissa Street, but luckily recovered.
I came in from Bike after the three loops, dropped the helmet and bike and grabbed my run number belt and took off. I made the best of the hills and came in as fast as I could.
Another Age Goup Win! Yay!!!
