THE ROUND THE ROCK ALCATRAZ CHALLENGE - August 6th, 2016

#4/5 Senior Master women about 2 hours for 10 miles around Alcatraz.
A photo from the last turn... still working hard!

The Women and Co-ed race started by about 10:45am.. It was a medium - long paddle to the start.  We got there about 15 seconds before the race began.  The run down to Alcatraz was fast, with the flood tide. Our Steersperson, Pat, turned on the buoy beyond Alcatraz masterfully.  Then we fought the chop to the SF coastline.  (I think it was Pier 29).   We made our way up beyond Pier 39, the Jeremiah O'Brian, Aquatic Park, St Francis Yacht Club and what I thought was the end Buoy.. but no - we paddled back to where we started, near the Golden Gate Bridge. We had to fight flood back to the start.. Whew!  By the time we turned around and headed to the Finish, we were all mostly TOAST!

NCOCA SPRINTS Alameda July 9th, 2016

Kapuna Women Ruddered OC1 - 4/9  1:28:41
Master Women OC6 - 2/
Open Women OC6 -

It was a long day at the Sprint races in Alameda, 8:00am - 5:45pm for me, I left early....  My first race was at about 12:00, second at about 2:30pm and third not until after 5:00pm.  The wind had come up and even though it was a hot day most every where, not so at the  Sea Plane Basin in Alameda.. We were huddled together behind a cement block waiting for our last race - Women's Open .. everyone freezing and wind blown.  But, after the impeccable turn by our steers person, Pat Koren.. we were in the lead in our heat.  A completely unexpected event because most of the seats were filled with Kapuna (60+), Senior Masters (50+), and Masters (40+) , not Open (any age)

Swim - .38 mi | Bike - 10 mi | Run - 5k
#1/5 (60-64)  - 1:25:46
#15/120 F overall

On the podium again with Deb Melnikoff

The day began at 4:00am - alarm off, jump out of bed and get ready to drive to Half Moon Bay.  Hot Lemon water at 4:15am, coffee at 4:40am,  Hammer whey protein, a little oatmeal with banana and Hammer Gel by 4:50am and then head out to car.. 5:08am departure from Mill Valley.  At that hour, it is a 50 minute drive.  I had to stop for gas in San Francisco.... so strange, I thought that I had filled my tank at my local gas station on Saturday.. but it was a bluff.. no gas went in in to the tank... clearly not paying attention....

No one much on the road until arrival in  El Granada ( 6am) and trying to find a place to park... in the future, I will simply park in one of the lots or on the highway.  I had not picked up my race packet, so that was the first order of business.

I set up my bike in Row 35 - close to the bike out.  I saw my pals Deb and Michelle over in the lower number rows across a grass median... we hung out in the chilly morning.  I wore everything I had to keep warm before our race start.  Sunrise was at 6:31am... we could see that it was going to be a jaw dropping gorgeous day!

I took 4 Race Caps and 4 Endurolytes at 6:45 and started sippin on my Heed.  finished most of it by 7:30 am.  By that time, I'd switched from clothes to my full Xterra wetsuit and was ready to walk down to the beach to watch the Olympic distance and Paddle board race starts.  I put my face in the water just to test my goggles....  ouch!  really, really cold water!
