BERKELEY PIER OUTRIGGER RACES - May 30th, 2015

Masters Women - 9 mile  1:38:11  5/6

Here we are at the starting line -- about 10:15am on May 30th.  The morning began at 5:45am.  By the time I arrived at the Berkeley Marina,  the club was unloading the last of three canoes... oops.. should have left home a little earlier...... The rigging and putting on spray skirts took a while.. as it always does.

Our crew:
Seat 1 - Eva
Seat 2 - Angie
Seat 3 - Dori
Seat 4 - Michele
Seat 5 - Me
Seat 6 - Lizzie

Well, it was a fun crew.. we fought the wind and waves out towards the gate.. to the turn around towards Treasure Island - and rode the wind and wind waves back to the finish line.. we just were not very fast.

Oh well.. we did have fun!  My fuel strategy:

The usual breakfast (coffee, vits, Whey Protein, oatmeal, banana, etc)  at 6:00am.
3 Race Caps/3 Endurolytes and some Heed one hour prior to race.
Sips of water right before the start and at the finish line.. not during the race.

HOPE FOR CROHN'S SPRINT TRIATHLON - Crissy Field, San Francisco May 16, 2015

S=400yd | B=11mi | R=5k    1:05:59
1/1 (F60-64)  |  5/73 (F overall)  | 38/164 (Overall)

A USAT sanctioned triathlon close to home.. that was my motivation for signing up for this triathlon.  A very short sprint race the transition area at Crissy Field.   Race packets had to be picked up before the race, in my case at the Sports Basement between 4:00pm and 6:00pm.... so, I made the trip across the Golden Gate Bridge in Friday afternoon traffic...

Check... should have parked at the North tower and rode my bike over to Crissy Field.... the drive back to Marin took over an hour.....

Oh well... I got home, made dinner and got ready to race.
Up at 4:30am, coffee, oatmeal, vitamins, protein by about 5:15 or so..  a short and easy drive to Crissy Field... easy parking, but.... with the wind chill it was COLD!

OREGON DUNES SPRINT TRIATHLON - Florence Oregon May 9, 2015

S - 750 yds | B - 10.5 mi | R - 5k   1:31:00
1/2 (60-64) | 8/35 F overall

The Race course.. Start in the Lake and Finish at the Sand Dunes
Waiting for the Sprint Tri to begin

Sprint Women are off!

Ninety minutes later, making my way up the Dune

Almost to the Mat!

Number One (melanie mociun)  and Number Two (meg rawlings) (60-64)
The Sprint Race started at 9:00am.. a very civilized time to begin a race!  I arrived at the Transition zone at about 7:15am.. plenty of parking and plenty of time to get ready for the race.  I decided at the last minute to wear my toe clips and running shoes for the bike ride.  The Sprint bike course is not very hilly, so it turned out to be an okay decision.  It definitely saved be time in T2.
The swim seemed a little long, or maybe I took the second turn too wide, but I was out of the water in about 16 minutes.  The water was 59 or 60 degrees.  Two caps and my long sleeved Xterra felt good - still chilly though.  I had put out a jersey to put on for the bike, didn't put it on, but was kind of sorry.. the wind chill on the bike was hard to take in spots.. but I just kept pedaling as fast as I could.  The turn around came quickly, and I made it back to T2 in about 40 minutes.
The run was on grass, trails, road and sand.  I didn't need my sunglasses so I carried them in my right hand.. I was really trying to watch out for roots, etc.. but I tripped and hit the ground with my  glasses... oh so sad.. I had been using the Smith glasses with interchangeable lenses for the past several years.... bummer, but oh well.  I got up, dusted off and kept going.  I knew my run would be slow... pretty solid 10 minute miles...... : (
But.. climbing the sand dune to the finish line in the end was very exhilarating because of all of the cheering and great support along the way up the hill... a great race and great venue!  The Best In The West Race company is Top Shelf!   And Athletepath.com is my new favorite race registration portal.. no extra fees... great customer service!
The climb to the finish on soft sand... whew!
